Third Sunday after the Epiphany
Could you “Imagine?”
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It’s been a busy few weeks in Washington, D.C. Sure, the big event was the inauguration, but in the week before it, President Jimmy Carter was laid in State, and his funeral was held at the National Cathedral.
One thing that stirred up many Christians was the singing of John Lennon’s song, “Imagine.” This song provided an opportunity for the Church to discuss the appropriate use of music in the funeral service and what a Christian funeral should confess.
While some may say they don’t see the problem with singing a song like “Imagine,” you do not have to listen long to the lyrics to see the issue. The song begins, “Imagine there’s no heaven…” This is not exactly a confession of our eternal life in Christ Jesus, nor does it comfort the grieving or provide hope for them.
We know why because there is a heaven, an eternal presence where God’s children will be gathered into His kingdom. If you’d like to learn more about this heaven, come to Bible class as we continue studying the Book of Revelation.
Otherwise, I’d invite you to listen to an interview by Pastor Hans Fiene on Issues, etc., that explains why the song Imagine wasn’t appropriate and what hymns would be a better confession for a Christian funeral. You can also read an article he wrote on the matter. Links for both are below.

Ultimately, we shouldn’t imagine there is no heaven; instead, take comfort that Christ’s death and resurrection have opened the gates to heaven again, and this is our confession each Sunday as we gather at His altar.
In Christ,
Pastor
