All Saints Day
All Saints Day
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This Sunday, we will observe All Saints Day (November 1st). It’s the custom of the church to remember the faithful servants of God who have died to this life and now rest with Christ Jesus.
Depending on your upbringing, observing any saint may appear “Roman Catholic.” However, the first confessional document of the Lutheran Church in 1530 stated,
“Our churches teach that the remembrance of the saints is to be commended in order that we may imitate their faith and good works according to our calling.”
(Augsburg Confession 21)
So, what does this mean?
It means that we remember the saints of God. The purpose of these remembrances is threefold.
First, we thank God for giving faithful servants to His Church.
Second, through such remembrance, our faith is [to be] strengthened as we see the mercy that God extended to His saints.
Third and lastly, the saints or faithful departed are examples by which we may imitate their faith and holy living according to our calling in life.
This Sunday, let’s join our voices and sing with the Church in heaven and on earth, praising our Redeemer and Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Peace,
Pastor Rogness
