Fourth Sunday in Lent (Laetare)
Laetare Sunday and First Communion
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is a big week at Good Shepherd: Laetare (Lay-tar-e) Sunday and First Communion Sunday!
First, Laetare is the Latin from the Introit opening antiphon (verse), “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her.” Rejoice because the salvation of the Lord is near, the cross of Good Friday, and Christ’s victory is fast approaching. You’ll notice a slight reprieve from the solemn character of Lent this week, as the traditional color of the week is rose or pink. This parallels the season of Advent as the third candle on the Advent wreath is a rose or pink to symbolize joy, but it also reminds us that we are now halfway through the season.
We also rejoice this Sunday because nine congregation children will receive their First Communion. As you might recall, these children had to recite the Ten Commandments, the Apostles Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer before being admitted to the First Communion Class. Over the past three months, they have met with me after Sunday School for an additional class of instruction and preparation for receiving the Lord’s Supper.
Please rejoice with these children this Sunday as they are admitted to the Lord’s Supper, and most of all, keep them in your prayers.
See you on Sunday!
